The Way of the Cross

Over the Brooklyn Bridge

Each Good Friday, thousands gather to walk the Brooklyn Bridge carrying the Cross through the heart of New York City.

In 1996, a small group of friends realized how the Brooklyn Bridge pillars reminded the iconic stained glasses of gothic churches. From this intuition, came the idea of making the bridge an open cathedral to remember the day in which Christ died to save all of us. Starting on April 5th, 1996, The way of the cross over the Brooklyn Bridge became an annual tradition of the Catholic Church in NYC, drawing families, students, clergy, and visitors from across the country.

The procession was inspired by Fr. Luigi Giussani, founder of the ecclesial movement of Communion & Liberation, who encouraged Christians to rediscover the beauty of Christ's Passion through prayer, music, silence, and companionship.

Today, the Way of the Cross is more than an annual event. It is an invitation to enter into the mystery of Christ's Passion with renewed attention, discovering that the One who carried the Cross continues to walk beside us in the ordinary circumstances of every day.
